The concept of malocchio, known as “evil eye” in Italian, is a widespread belief throughout Italy, but prevalent in southern Italian culture. Particularly in the region of Calabria it is called “affascino”. It refers to the idea that the envious or malevolent gaze of one person can bring misfortune, illness or bad luck to another individual. This belief is deeply rooted in the folklore and traditions of the region and reflects historical anxieties related to jealousy and rivalry within close-knit communities.
In Calabria, the evil eye is often associated with various symptoms, such as unexpected illness, depression, or even financial problems. Many families take protective measures against the evil eye, believing that certain rituals can protect them from its effects. It is also often associated with less serious occurrences such as frequent hiccups or a burst of yawning or ringing of the ears. A common practice involves the use of amulets, such as coral or “horn” (a horn-shaped pendant) or chili pepper, which are thought to ward off negative energy and protect the wearer.
But there is also a specific ritual to ward off the evil eye! The ritual of “sfascinare” or break the evil eye spell is an important cultural practice. This ritual typically involves a healer or trusted person performing a series of prayers and symbolic actions. Common elements of the ritual may include the use of water, olive oil and a dish. The healer often uses these items to perform a cleansing ceremony, invoking divine protection and trying to neutralize the harmful effects of the evil eye.
During the sfascinare ritual, participants may recite specific prayers while observing certain movements with the water and oil. The dish is sometimes broken to symbolize the destruction of negative energies. This ritual not only serves to address individual fears, but also fosters community solidarity as it reinforces shared beliefs and cultural identity.
Each family has its own tradition; this ritual is very personal. The curious thing is that it can only be handed down, and thus taught, on Christmas night! Want to try to immerse yourself in this practice? We have found a video for you!
