What You Need to Know: Useful Information
Genepy is more than just an after-dinner drink; it is a legendary Alpine liqueur distilled from the Artemisia genipi plant. This rare species of wormwood grows exclusively in high-altitude environments, often clinging to rocky slopes above 7,000 feet (2,000 meters). Harvested by hand during the peak of summer bloom, the plant is infused or distilled to create a golden, herbaceous elixir known for its digestive properties and intense, balsamic aroma. Visiting an artisan distillery allows you to witness the traditional transformation of these wild mountain herbs into a sophisticated spirit that has fueled Alpine conviviality for centuries.

Getting There
Since Genepy distilleries are located throughout the entire Aosta Valley – from the lower valley to the peaks of Mont Blanc – you can easily find an experience near your base.
By Car:
- Most distilleries are located along the A5 Highway (Torino-Aosta) corridor or just off the SS26 national road. This makes them very accessible for a quick stop while traveling between mountain resorts.
By Train:
- The main railway line stops at major towns like Pont-Saint-Martin, Verrès, Châtillon, and Aosta. Many local producers have shops or tasting rooms within walking distance of these stations. Check schedules on Trenitalia.com.
By Bus:
- The Arriva and SVAP bus lines connect the entire central valley floor with frequent service. Whether you are staying in a side valley or the regional capital, you can easily reach the larger towns where many historic distilleries are headquartered.
- Pro-Tip: Check the VDA Transport app for real-time schedules, especially if you plan to visit a producer in a smaller hamlet.
Because Genepy is produced region-wide, we recommend using Google Maps to search for “Distilleria” near your current location to find the closest artisan producer.
Useful Contacts
Because many distilleries are small, family-run operations, opening hours for tours and tastings can vary. We highly recommend contacting a local Tourism Office. They can provide a curated list of nearby producers that are open for visitors:
- Aosta Regional Tourism Office (Main Hub): +39 0165 236627 | [email protected]
- Courmayeur Tourism Office (Upper Valley): +39 0165 842060 | [email protected]
- Pont-Saint-Martin Tourism Office (Lower Valley): +39 0125 804843 | vallecentrale@turismo.vda.it
What to Bring & Pro-Tips
- Cash: Perfect for picking up a few bottles or local herbal teas directly from the source to take home as authentic souvenirs.
- Photography: The copper stills and drying herbs inside the distilleries are incredibly photogenic!
- Comfortable clothes: Production areas can be cool, so bring a light windbreaker or sweater for your tour.
- The ideal season: While the herbs are harvested in early summer, distillery tours and tastings are a fantastic year-round activity, offering a warm, aromatic escape during the winter months.
The “Hidden Gem“
Don’t just settle for a glass of Genepy; ask your host about “Caffè alla Valdostana“. This traditional coffee is served in a communal wooden “Friendship Cup” (Coppa dell'Amicizia). It’s a potent, flaming mix of coffee, sugar, orange zest, and – most importantly – a generous splash of Genepy or Grappa. It is the ultimate ritual of mountain friendship and the perfect way to conclude a day of Alpine exploration.
