Learning accurate Italian pronunciation is essential from the very beginning. It’s important to mention that when we talk about having good Italian pronunciation we don’t mean that you have to fool Italians into thinking that you’re a native speaker with your perfect Italian accent. That would, of course, be incredible, but it’s neither important nor necessary.

Remember, the goal is communication not perfection!

Pronunciation and accent are not necessarily the same thing. Learning authentic Italian pronunciation is a process of understanding how each individual sound in the language is produced and, more importantly, becoming as familiar as possible with what each consonant and vowel is “supposed” to sound like when used in real, spoken Italian.

Being familiar with how Italian is really pronounced will significantly help you in three main ways:

1️⃣ You will be understood better by Italians

Italians are not as used to hearing foreigners speak Italian as English speakers are to hearing foreigners speak English. So any divergence from authentic Italian pronunciation can throw an Italian off and cause misunderstandings. Pronouncing words as accurately as possible will improve your ability to communicate with Italians, even as a beginner.

2️⃣ You will understand more Italian

The more familiar you are with what Italian sounds like then the more likely you are to recognize words when you hear them spoken.

Say, for example, you read the phrase FARE UN GIRO (to go for a walk/drive) in a phrase book and then while you were out and about on the streets of Rome, you hear this phrase uttered by an Italian passing by. If you know how those words are supposed to be pronounced then you should recognize that phrase when you hear it spoken, even if you had never heard it before.

That’s why knowing authentic pronunciation will improve your overall comprehension of Italian and speed up your learning!

3️⃣ Your interactions with Italians will be more fulfilling

When you are able to understand more and make yourself better understood, you will find that your Italian experience will be far more rewarding and enjoyable.

Now, having read all of this you might be feeling a bit anxious and overwhelmed already… So please don’t, it’s all going to be OK! We really want to emphasize the fact that you don’t have to sound like a native Italian speaker in order to be understood, that’s not what we’re saying! As long as you know how the sounds of Italian should be pronounced and you make an honest effort to produce the sounds correctly, then you are already doing wonderfully! As we always say, the goal is communication not perfection.

As a beginner of Italian we want you to start your Italian-learning journey with your best foot forward – that’s why we made this guide! Unfortunately, many other guides, courses and apps either don’t teach Italian pronunciation sufficiently (if at all), or they teach it in a haphazard, ineffective way that doesn’t really help you learn.

So we’re very happy you’re here because you are going to learn EXCELLENT Italian pronunciation!

Is Italian Pronunciation Hard?

The question of whether pronunciation of a certain language is hard or not is relative – it all depends on your native language. Seeing as this Ultimate Italian Beginner’s Guide is designed for English speakers then the short answer is….

YES!…

…and NO! (phew!)

First let’s get the “bad” news out of the way, and by bad we simply mean Italian pronunciation can be hard because it’s just different to what you’re used to. Learning a new language is not exactly easy, as we’ve already said, and it takes real work and effort to achieve results. This includes the pronunciation of Italian – it’s not English, after all, it’s a totally different language with different rules, different sound patterns, different intonation and word stress, which can be a challenge when you’ve spent your whole life speaking one way in your own language. But we aren’t afraid of a challenge, are we?!

Now the good news.

So, why is Italian NOT so hard for English speakers?

Well, unlike some languages, almost all the sounds that exist in Italian more or less also exist in English – hooray! This will vary, however, depending on the variety of English that you speak.

Another big advantage of Italian is that the pronunciation is consistent – it is a completely phonetic language. This means that words are spelled exactly as they sound and are pronounced exactly as they are written. Always.

There is only ONE way to pronounce the combination ‘SCI-’ and only ONE way to pronounce the combination ‘-ZIONE’, and so on and so forth. Once you know the rules, you will never have to guess how a word is pronounced when you see it, or wonder how a word is spelled when you hear it. This is why spelling bee competitions do not exist in Italy; they literally couldn’t because the whole premise of a spelling bee is that there are different and inconsistent ways to spell words, despite how they are pronounced!

It really makes you feel for those who learn English and somehow have to remember that words with the same spelling are pronounced completely differently, such as:

Though, through, thought, thorough (thah-rah in British and Australian English)

You will never encounter this problem with Italian, so that’s one less thing to worry about.

So, let’s start learning Italian! Andiamo!
